Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies Reviews

I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone considering weight loss surgery. It will become a valuable tool in helping you make your decision. Should you decide to have WLS, it will guide you through the numerous tests and insurance hurdles, the hospital stay, potential complications, post-op diet, and post-op emotions.
I read this book three times on my journey towards WLS. I’m now a couple of weeks post-op and continue consulting it several times a week.
One of the authors is the surgeon that Al Roker selected for his weight-loss surgery (before she had written this book). Roker wrote a short intro to the book that explains how he extensively researched WLS and interviewed eight surgeons before selecting Dr. Kurian. Roker has the money to go to any surgeon in the world, and the fact that he chose Dr. Kurian among the eight that he interviewed emphasizes Kurian’s expertise in the field.
What impressed me most about this book was that the authors provided reliable and exhaustive information but didn’t try to “sell” the readers on having this surgery.
Unlike most other WLS books, this one covers not only the standard Roux-en-Y and its variations but also other procedures increasingly being considered by patients, such as Lap-Band and bibliopancreatic diversion. Less common procedures are also described. After a description of each procedure, the authors provide a list of pros and cons to that procedure.
Every step of the journey towards WLS is explained in detail here, including the numerous tests the surgeon will require, getting insurance approval, the hospital stay, the post-op diet, potential complications, and psychological factors. It is truly exhaustive.

I purchased this book shortly before my surgery. I was impressed with how thorough it was. It re-verified the information that I had received from my surgeon and local support group but also gave ideas for many recipes and discussed the non-physical changes more in depth than even my surgeon’s handbook did.

Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery: Over 140 Delicious Low-Fat High-Protein Recipes to Enjoy in the Weeks, Months and Years After Surgery Reviews

You know, one of the reasons I underwent a gastric bypass surgery in December was to escape the hordes of diet religionists–those odd folks who have found the solution to their dietary woes and will proselytize until the cows come home!
Enough, says I, of no-carb, low-carb, non-fat, low-fat, this, that and the next! Surgery so altered my body that many of the choices I once made are invalid–out of my hands! I can’t eat the crap that made me fat anymore because now it makes me sick.
And yet, imagine my dismay when, recovering from surgery, I found even more no-carb religionists among my surgically altered compatriots. One woman’s intolerance of my ideas was such that I had to filter her e-mail directly into the trash! Even though I had now an anatomy that wouldn’t tolerate certain foods, she insisted that I had to further subjugate myself to her odd notions of nutrition. No carbs ever again!
And so it was with a sigh of relief that I opened this book to read my new mantra: all in moderation.
After all, surgery means that you can eat what you love. You can have good food and love it. What you can’t do is binge. What you can do is make a meal of fat and sugar. And this book points the way.
Salads, entrees, desserts, it’s all here. And more: suggestions on how to change the contents of your refrigerator and pantry to make eating easier.
After all, life after surgery need not be deprivation. Most of got fat on deprivation and our inevitable gut-busting reaction to that, so a book that tells me how to enjoy what I now eat is a wonder to behold.
Thank you, Ms Levine! And thanks to my friend Laureen who recommended it!

Potential buyers should know that this book’s usefulness is not limited to those who have undergone weight loss surgery. It is also of tremendous value to people recovering from dental work or jaw surgery, where soft or liquid diets are of necessity for a length of time. As someone who has experienced this type of surgery, I can attest to the desire for flavorful meals, beyond what can be found in typical shakes, soups and purees. This book is the answer.
The recipes are varied, well-written, and most importantly, produce delicious results. Patt Levine has done an amazing job of creating a valuable resource for people who have gone through a trying physical ordeal, and now long to resume a sense of normalcy. Since so much of our lives revolves around what we eat, this book is a must-have!

Before & After, Revised Edition: Living and Eating Well After Weight-Loss Surgery
At 278 pounds, Susan Maria Leach couldn’t lie in bed without gasping for air, wasn’t able to fit into a restaurant booth, and could barely buckle the belt in an airplane seat. It would have been easier to allow life to pass her by than to continue fighting her weight problem, but she made the difficult decision to take back control. In 2001, Susan underwent gastric bypass surgery and started on a journey that would not only cut her body weight in half but would change her life. Before & After is both a memoir and a cookbook—an intimate account of Leach’s own transformation as well as a guide for those who have undergone or are considering the procedure. As Leach has learned in the six years since her operation, weight-loss surgery is not an event with a finish line or a goal weight—it is the beginning of a new way of life. This edition of Before & After has been updated with all that Leach has learned on her post-op journey. It includes a foreword by Leach’s surgeon, advice from a nutritionist, answers to more frequently asked questions about weight-loss surgery, a whole chapter on meal plans for different post-operative stages, suggested menus for early food stages, additional questions and answers affecting longer-term post-ops, and new information about products that have entered the marketplace. Most notably, this edition showcases a wealth of new recipes that utilize the latest in light and healthy ingredients for smart and savory results, including everything from Asian Meatballs with Peanut Sauce and Turkey Tenderloin with Apple Chipotle Chutney to sugar-free Pistachio Gelato and Lemon Almond Sponge Cake. Each recipe makes about four servings, but includes a measured serving for WLS people along with a calorie/carb/fat/protein count. Leach

Before & After, Revised Edition: Living and Eating Well After Weight-Loss Surgery Reviews

Just got my book in the mail today and I’ve not put it down. I am a post RNY surgery patient and I bought Ms. Leach’s original book at the start of my journey almost 3 years ago. I bought several books on the surgery but found Ms. Leach’s to be my bible. This book offers a soft cover which makes it easier to lay open on the counter when using her recipes (the book actually stays open to the page). You can’t beat the price. The valuable information contained in the book is a must for anyone considering the surgery, recovering from the surgery or like me 3 years post op. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I have to admit, I found this book disappointing. I am pre-surgery, in the qualifying stages, and have done a lot of research. I hear about dumping and emotional changes and mood swings and changes in relationships with people, as well as with food. So I expected this book would give me a realistic view of what to expect ahead.
I know each person’s experience is different, but I got tired of the diary of what gourmet food she was able to eat each day after surgery…plenty of ! points throughout the narrative, like a pre-teen’s diary, but not a lot of useful information. I was also disappointed she went right on eating absolutely everything pre-surgery to say goodbye to food, and then found she can still enjoy gourmet delights, just in tiny portions. Most of us are not gourmets, and it is not a healthy approach to weight loss surgery to have your last supper three times a day every day before surgery. You need to get your head in the right place first, and for me, it is breaking the food addiction. Susan obviously is able to continue her love affair with food without skipping a beat, just tiny portions. There’s very little about the emotional changes to expect, etc. – her life seems perfect, she can afford the plastic surgery afterward, etc. There was nothing about the psychological aspects involved, just the good times with friends and sharing delicious food and being loved. It just wasn’t the kind of book I’d hoped for.
On the positive side, though, I will say the recipes are good, and are broken down into WLS portions and normal portions.
I guess I was expecting a “real” person with real issues, but instead this book is about someone who has her cake and eats it too.

Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You (Healthy Living Cookbooks)
Learn how to eat right after weight loss surgery. In the past decade or so, there have been explosive increases in both the incidence of severe obesity and weight loss (bariatric) surgery. It has been shown that the incidence of bariatric surgical procedures has increased over 600% in the last decade. It is estimated that approximately 200,000 Americans (and another 200,000 adults world wide) will undergo a bariatric operation in 2006. This dramatic increase in operative cases is in part a testament to the safety and efficacy of the currently performed surgical procedures including the roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and the biliopancreatic diversion (with or without duodenal switch).Weight loss surgery is not a magic bullet, but with life-long positive lifestyle habits, including a healthy diet, you may be able to enjoy vibrant health you’ve never felt before.Once the surgery is over, there is a lifelong maintenance program to ensure not only that you keep the weight off, but that your body gets the right balance of nutrients. When you can only eat as much food as you can hold in your hand at a sitting, it’s vital that you are eating the right foods and taking the correct supplements to nourish your body for life. What sets Recipes After Weight Loss Surgery apart from previous cookbooks is the combined expertise of Margaret Furtado, MS, RD, LD/N and Lynette Schultz, a combination of almost 40 years’ experience in clinical nutrition and the culinary arts, respectively. Together, they’ll help you navigate your way through the sometimes turbulent waters after your weight loss surgery, and will provide you with general clinical guidelines after your procedure, as well as helpful hints for easing your transition from surgery to your new, healthy lifestyle. Fat No More Long Term Success Following Weight Loss Surgery
Finally, a book that talks about the work and changes necessary following weight-loss surgery to achieve long -term success. Surgery is only the beginning and the author emphasizes that right from the start.
Gail was first warned of the dangers of being overweight by her doctor when she was only six years old. By the time she was 30 years old, she weighed 250 pounds, although she was only 5’ 3” tall. She decided she had to take drastic measures when she turned 50 and had reached 327 pounds. By that point the health issues prevalent in her family history (including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer) had become of immediate concern.
She made two brave decisions: she decided to undergo gastric bypass surgery and she decided to share her experiences with people throughout the community. She had gastric bypass surgery in March 2004 and she published journal entries in a local magazine during the first 18 months of her journey into her new life.
When Gail found very little written material to help her deal with the issues of long-term success following the surgery, she decided to write a book. In this book she shares her story, her feelings, her success using life coaching, and many more things she learned along the way. This book, a collaboration with fellow writer Robert Magnan, is filled with warmth and humor and the understanding of someone who’s been there. Gail combines excerpts from her articles with commentary and valuable information.
Gail is now a certified life coach and motivational speaker helping people who are overweight understand and consider the option of weight-loss surgery. She coaches them through the ups and downs following the surgery and helps them find what they need to achieve long-term success – to be Fat No More.
